Common Reasons for Pet Surgery
There are many reasons as to why your pet may need surgery. The most common surgery we perform in our office is an elective one known as spay/neuter. During a spay or neuter procedure, parts of a pet's reproductive system are removed to prevent them from having unwanted litters down the road. This is a procedure that we generally recommend for all cats and dogs, so if your pet is not yet spayed or neutered, be sure to speak with our vet.
In addition to spay and neuter surgery, we also perform other types of pet surgery in our office, including soft tissue surgery and surgical removal of lumps/masses for biopsies.
What You Need to Know About Your Pet's Surgery and Recovery
If your pet is going to have a surgery done in our office, there are a few things we'd like you to know about what to expect from the process and the recovery as well.
Pets are placed under general anesthesia prior to surgical procedures in our office. We understand that some pet owners have concerns about having their pet put under anesthesia, which is why we make sure to perform all necessary pre-surgical testing (including blood testing, where needed) to ensure that your pet can be safely placed under anesthesia for the procedure.
On the day of your pet's procedure, we will carefully monitor all of his or her vital signs not just during the surgery, but during recovery as he or she comes out of anesthesia as well.
Once your pet is ready to go home, we'll contact you and arrange for you to meet with our veterinary team so we can provide you with any necessary instructions for aftercare and recovery. If needed, we can also prescribe pain medications to help with your pet's recovery process.
